Today's Alumni Spotlight is Connie (Sutton) Toensing '81 Best Memory: Friendships. I was blessed to attend Rudyard Schools from Kindergarten thru my Senior year. During those years friendships began, endured changes, and still continue on today. During that time I also learned the heartache of losing a friend. In my 7th grade year the Kincheloe Air Force base closed. My friend had to move. There was not the ease of keeping in touch like there is today. Friendships being created is by far the best memory. Favorite Class/Activity: My favorite class was math and bookkeeping. Typing was my least favorite, not because of the teacher Mr. Tromblay, he was the best, I hated the manual typewriters. Advice to Students: Be true to yourself, be honest with others and pursue your dreams. Keep your circle of friends to a group who have the same values as yourself. Life is full of choices. Learning from your bad choices will make the better choices easier to make What are you doing now: I got married and attended Lake State Superior University, pursuing an accounting degree. I had been working at McDonald’s during my high school days and continued on with the company until I was 21 years old. I accepted a part-time bookkeeping position with a small credit union in Sault Ste Marie. As an employee with the credit union I grew with the organization and have been the CEO of the Chippewa County Credit Union for the past 22 years.

This week's alumni spotlight is Tanner Norton '19. What was your best memory from school? Playing in the 2017 baseball quarter finals at Gaylord, Michigan. What was your favorite class/activity? One of my favorite ways to spend my mornings was to weight lift with Mr. K and jam to his “oldies but goodies.” I also enjoyed finishing my day with Ms. Verdoni and developing my love for math. What advice do you have for students? The transition from high school, whether that is to college or some other profession, can sometimes be difficult. With that in mind, work hard for your success and set goals to help guide your actions. Having this mindset will help ease the transition. What did you do right out of high school, and what do you do now? In 2019, I began my career at Grand Valley State University studying nursing. Today, I am in my senior year of nursing school and currently training to run the Boston Marathon this upcoming April.

This week's spotlight is Erin (Jarvie) Pavloski '09. What was your best memory from school? I think my best memories were from senior year: my last home basketball game, running for homecoming court with Daine (my husband now!), and graduation! What was your favorite class/activity? It's difficult to choose between AP Biology and basketball - I loved both! AP Biology is why I chose to go to college for environmental science and biology, and I have loved basketball since I started playing at Rudyard Elementary School in 4th grade. I have many great memories from both! What advice do you have for students? In my career now, I get to work with many first-year college students. I think my advice is no matter what you do choose to do after high school, finding what you truly enjoy and always trying your very best at it is important. What did you do right out of high school, and what do you do now? Right out of high school, I left in the fall to attend Olivet College, double-majoring in environmental science and biology. After graduating, I worked for The Nature Conservancy, then went to graduate school at Michigan State University, and after that, worked at a Conservation District coordinating an invasive species program. In all my past positions, my favorite part of each was education and outreach. Now I'm so happy to be back at Olivet College as an assistant professor of environmental science! If any student is interested in learning more about Olivet College, please reach out!
